Bellinzona

Eu amo castelos, museus, catedrais e parques. Visitamos muitos lugares lindos.

(Muitas felicidades, muitas coisas lindas) Não conseguimos segurar as lágrimas.

*************
We were fortunate in that we worked with many congenial people. One of them was head of the department of Meteorology, a friendly Italian called Franco. When he heard about our trip, one day he came to the office and said: _ I would like to ask you a favor. I asked what I could do for him and he said his mother-in-law lived in Bellinzona, Switzerland, and was mad about candied cashews. As we were going to Europe and planned to travel by train all over the place, could we take some cashew candy for her?

I said yes, and a few days before our trip he brought us a box of candied cashews.

The first city we visited was London. We were so delighted with the city that we stayed there for 10 days. We had the address of the Young Women Christian Association and stayed there for one night. We didn't like the place and the next day we had the good fortune of finding another place. What a spectacular location! It was a house established with the purpose of hosting visitors from the island of Malta, but that sometimes made exceptions for others.

It was very good to stay in that house. It was very clean, with beautiful shiny waxed wooden floors, and the best of all: a Portuguese governess! My friend did not speak English and was relieved to be able to talk with our new friend Candida, who would wait for us with hot tea and a slice of cake at the end of the day, without charging us extra for this. When we went to Portugal, we met her son and his wife, very friendly people.

I just love castles, museums, cathedrals and parks. We visited many gorgeous places. We found out that in London there are concerts at noon in many churches, and that people like to have lunch in parks. They come out of their offices and stores, walk to one of the many parks carrying their lunch in a paper bag and eat it there, admiring the work of painters who also like to go to these parks, armed with their canvas, brushes, paint and easels.

After our stay in London, now comfortably attired with adequate clothes – it was winter and we bought boots, warm coats and gloves to protect us from the cold – we began our train trip. France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. We wanted to see everything at once!

Finally we arrived at Bellinzona, to deliver the candied cashews. When we got there, we met such a lovable couple that they won our hearts forever. They had prepared a guest room for us, with new sheets and towels, soap, shampoo, moisturizer, magazines and books. Everything they thought we could need. And we, who had gone there just to deliver the candy, ended up staying for a couple of days. We were introduced to all of their relatives, one of their nephews even invited us to go skiing with the family. We decided to decline the invitation – after all, we had never skied and did not want to come back with a leg in a cast!

I still remember like it was yesterday when we said our goodbyes. With their eyes brimming with tears, everyone hugged us and said: _ Tanti auguri, tante belle cose! (Much happiness, many beautiful things) We could not hold back our tears.
