Achados e Perdidos / Lost and Found

* * * * *

I always thank God for the religious education I received from my parents and grand-parents. We always gave thanks for the food we were going to eat, for the blessings received, for our famiy; we prayed for everyone. A simple prayer we said before falling asleep said: “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep; If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.”

Some people may find this prayer somewhat mournful, but not me. Very young I learned to put my trust in God. When I became an adult, I faced many difficult situations, sometimes without anyone beside me to give me some advice, a friendly word. Then I always remembered Bible verses learned in Sunday School or at home. Some of them are: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” - Psalm 119:105; “I lift up my eyes to the hills - from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord,who made heaven and earth” - Psalm 121:1; “but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. ” - Isaiah 40:31; “‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ” - John 14:6; “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty- John 6:35; "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." Revelation 21:4; “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” - John 3:16; among so many others...

It couldn't have been any different - when I was about 13 years old, my older brother 15 and my sister 17, we were given beautiful Bibles, black with golden page borders and our names engraved in gold on the cover. During a long time that Bible accompanied me; in it I would read the devotional passages and I took it with me to church.

After I had my children, they would take it to Sunday School and on camping trips, until I also gave them beautiful Bibles, this time brown with golden borders, but without their engraved names.

I don't have my Bible anymore, despite the engraved name. I don't know what happened, but I imagine it was taken to a meeting and lost. But sometimes there are facts that make us think what was the reason why they happened.

My brother Clovis lived in São João da Boa Vista, but for work reasons he spent a few years in Brasilia and later in the USA. On one occasion he was visiting his family there and, when he walked across the main public square in the city, he noticed a book lying on a garden bench. He stopped, took it in his hands and saw it was a Bible. He looked at the cover and... on it was the name of our sister Ellen, engraved in gold!

Ellen also had lived in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and in the USA - Florida and Georgia. I don't know when that Bible was lost, but how on earth did it end in the hands of our brother, who had been living away from Brazil, 50 years later? An awesome mystery...
