At
that time, one day my mother called me and said she would like me to
pay a visit to someone. I was startled and asked: _ All by myself?
She then explained that a new family had moved to São João da Boa
Vista recently and wanted me to meet their daughter Luci, who had
become blind after having had a brain tumor. After the surgery, she
could no longer see or walk.
They
lived close to us, we just had to go down Olaia Street, turn left and
go a little further. When I arrived, D. Ligia, Luci's mother, hugged
me and said she was very happy I had come to see them. She took me to
the backyard, where I saw Luci, who was sleeping in a lawn chair
under a net to keep the insects away.
I
sat beside her very quiet and looked around me. Soon she stirred and
asked: _ Who is there? I answered that I was there to visit her and
told her my name. She asked me what I looked like, then I started
telling her the color of my hair, eyes and the asked to touch my
face. Very delicately she followed my profile with her fingertips,
then said she was very happy to have a new friend.
Whenever
possible I went down Olaia Street to see my friend Luci. I liked her
very much, as well as her sister Cecilia, her brothers and her
parents - her father Laercio Azevedo, who taught art and played the
violin very well, and her mother Ligia. We spent hours talking and
her family was always very friendly.
My
mother told me Luci's health was not good and the prognosis was not
favorable. One morning, about two years after meeting the Azevedo
family, I was getting ready to go to school when the telephone rang.
My mother answered it and I heard her exclaim: _ Oh, no! At that
moment, I was sure that I wouldn't see my friend Luci again.
That
was the first time a dear and close person died. An immense sadness
invaded my heart. Today, when I remember her, I feel very glad I met
her. My teacher Laercio drew my profile afterwards as a token of
gratitude, and it is on my wall until today.

Nessa
Eu me espantei e perguntei: _ Sozinha? Ela
Minha mãe atendeu e eu a ouvi
tristeza imensa. Mas hoje, quando me lembro disso, sinto-me feliz por
tê-la conhecido. O professor Laércio desenhou meu perfil, e guardo
o desenho até hoje.
