The beautiful city where I grew up / A linda cidade onde cresci

In 1950 we moved to São João da Boa Vista, the “City of Wonderful Sunsets” - and what sunsets! A magnificent spectacle. We were already four children, now with another one born in Piracicaba, my brother Paulo Eduardo.

We lived on Carlos Kielander street for a while, then on Dona Gertrudes Avenue. What a beautiful landscape greeted us every morning! Right in front of the house began Olaia Street, where uncle Augusto, aunt Gina and cousins Marilena and Gláucia lived. At a distance the blue mountains of the Mantiqueira range could be seen. When aunt Alice came to visit us, she loved to sit in contemplation of the mountains.

We had a very happy childhood there, in a beautiful and calm city, with many friends that we visited all the time. We studied at “Cel. Joaquim José” Elementary School, in front of a lovely public garden where the city band played on Sunday evenings and where we rode our bicycles in the late afternoons.

As I learned to read early, I started school in the second grade, after a period of only three months in the first grade, in what was called emergency class (designed to allow teachers to take up their positions). I had no learning difficulties, but my penmanship was not very good. No writing preparation, tracing circles, wavy and zigzag lines. Everyday we had to copy the name of the school, of the city and the date. In those days we had to write with a wooden ink pen that was dipped in a inkwell set in the middle of the desk. Our fingers were always ink-stained.

I had great teachers: Mrs. Odila, Mrs. Ritinha, Miss Flora. We used to write a lot, even in the second grade.

When I was 9 years old, I was asked to be a military style “drum majorette” in the 7th of September (our Independence Day) parade. I was so worried that I would let the twirling baton fall... As I was taller than my classmates, I was later on always chosen to carry the Brazilian flag. How heavy the national flag was, at the end of the parade!

Estudamos no Grupo Escolar “Cel.

Tive ótimas professoras: D. Odila, D. Ritinha, D. Flora.
